The Challenge – Have A Baby On June 12th 2012

The Prize - A Russian Family Van and Three Russian Scooters!

In 2007, Russia was facing a major demographic problem – Birth-rates were falling and it was feared that the country’s population could fall by 40 million people by the middle of the century. Something had to be done. The situation was the most urgent problem facing Russia, people were even offered cash incentives for procreating.

But Governor Sergei Morozov of the Ulyanovsk province didn’t think that these incentives went far enough, so he invented an entertaining extra scheme in order to encourage couples in his region to participate. He decided that September 12th would become a Holiday Day called ‘Family Contact Day’ and that couples who had a baby born exactly 9 months after this date (on June 12th, Russia Day, a national holiday) would be rewarded with prizes.

In 2007, the grand prize went to Irina and Andrei Kartuzov, who received a UAZ-Patriot, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) – We were so inspired by this truly unique idea that we’ve decided to run a competition looking for a Russia Day LomoBaby 2012, and we’ve even got a Russian Family Van and Russian Scooters to give away as prizes! We’re not kidding, honest!
